It is an undeniable fact that computers are getting smaller and cheaper, and the new Odroid U2 offers you 1.7GHz of quad-core power that you can hold in the palm of your hand for only $89.

Think of the Odroid U2 as a Raspberry Pi on steroids. It features a quad-core 1.7 GHz Samsung Exynos4412 Prime Cortex-A9, a Mali-400 Quad Core 440MHz 3D accelerator, 2GB of memory, two USB ports, microSD card storage, HDMI output, and a built-in Ethernet port. Put simply, it is the equivalent of a high-end smartphone from a year ago, for under $100.

On the operating system front, the Odroid U2 runs Android 4.x and Ubuntu 12.10.

While the Odroid U2 is aimed primarily at developers and those looking to create embedded solutions, the device would, with a little bit of additional open source software and some Android apps, make a handy, low-cost, low-power desktop system.

The Odroid U2 is not going to win any performance awards, but in the right hands, and with a little know-how, this is a fantastic platform for development and creating custom embedded solutions.

          Its end product.

          Its for customers for consumption.

          RPI and anything else that claim to be better than RPI ( :D ), is for embedded first. To get something for consumers you need first to create that solution.

          So its not apple to apple comparison.
          OUYA (will) shake console market.
          RPI shaked embedded market.

    Super little board for the price, I've got one of these on order.

    It has the same chip as the Galaxy S3 and Note II.

    faster than a celeron made today or faster than a P-III made a decade ago?

    The article all but states this gadget is another content consumption device.

    And Android... isn't that based on the same Java that Homerland security and others are all poo-poohing, despite not making the same stink about just-as-hole-ridden Windows over the last 2 decades? Get government out of the free market...

      Of course, you haven't heard of clusters and/or parallel computing.

      First and foremost, celerons and Pentium III had no GPU of consideration, so 3D rendering is much much faster on a Mali assisted system than any other computer created 10 years ago.

      With that in mind, Skyrim if natively ported will render faster and smoother, even compared with i3.

      Next comes the fact of HD video editing and code compilation. If you consider that a Celeron 877 has a list price of $86 bucks with no supporting chips, you get a full system price of $250 at the least, including RAM and chipset. That gets you two Odroids.

      Extrapolate that to the current street price of a system used for that specs, you find yourself on a $700 price point, that's almost 8 Odroids, which if configured as a cluster will compile code and edit HD video in realtime (even 4k).

      Just remember Toy Story 2 and Titanic were rendered with server farms using far less powerful than the one mentioned and the High Availablity kernels are available and free.

      So stop the FUD and get your facts straight.

    • Just a few corrections

      Android isn't based on the same Java that Homeland an others are poo-poohing. First, what ghey were poo-poohing related to security surrounding web-based Java applets. It had nothing to do with Java based applications outside that environment. Second, while Android uses the Java language and has a similar API strucure, it is not the Oracle Java that was in question. There was even a court case that Oracle lost where they were, among other things, accusing Google of forking Java. Google created a programming environment that was different to Oracle's Java under the hood, but familiar enough at the language and API level to remove the steep learning curve for anyone familiar with Java.

  • a more affordable Roku box

    Think about it, you can hook up a large storage HD full of FLV, MP4 movies, music, pictures. You can watch Netflix, Hulu, etc and even use your 50" HD tv to surf the web from your couch. All on a quad core PC that would normally cost $200 for a full desktop or $250 for a laptop w/out HDMI.
