Okta is in the midst of integrating its cloud-based identity management service with Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and 2013.
Essentially, IT admins will be able to manage external partner and customer access to SharePoint by using Okta's identity service in a way that mimics using Active Directory with employees.
Okta reps stressed that this approach eliminates "security risks associated with adding non-employees to a corporate directory" because the hybrid cloud architecture doesn't require installation or management of an additional on-premises directory.
The SharePoint integration follows up Okta's June launch of a new set of tools and suite of APIs dedicated to account creation, automated provisioning, access control and session management.
This week's deal continues with Okta's push to ramp up industry alliances and partnerships as well.
For instance last fall, Okta teamed with Software-as-a-Service provider Workday to develop a cloud-based identity lifecycle management service for the enterprise with a particular focus on human resources.
