in brief Optus has run into problems again with its mobile phone network after a software upgrade over the weekend broke the carrier's ability to port some numbers to or from the network.

The telco had been undergoing an upgrade of its mobile porting systems on Saturday and Sunday after which a "small number" of customers had issues porting their numbers to or from the network, a spokesperson for the company told ZDNet.com.au.

The problem has still not been fixed, but Optus has been working with the customers individually to resolve it. The spokesperson was unable to say exactly how many customers had been affected, or when they might expect to be able to port numbers again.

It has been a problematic time for the carrier, which experienced major mobile outages a few months earlier.

  • Data Use

    What really scares me is that Optus can not even give its users a method of finding out how much data on their plan has been used. 3 and other carriers have a mobile web site where you can check how much of your data plan you have used. Optus tells you that you have to wait until you get your account, isn't that a little late and a lot irresponsible?

  • Small number ???

    Its funny how the individual becomes just another statistic. I was one of these small numbers. Moved from Optus postpaid to TPG $20 prepaid. Attempted activation on Sat. Lost my old number on Mon and only just got number back, but SMS is stuffed. I lost my number for the whole week ???!!!

  • Optus -> Virgin porting.

    I'm in the same boat as this... Been waiting for 8 days now for my number to go across to Virgin Mobile. So, I'm stuck with Optus at the moment as I'm just getting "you'll need to wait for another 24 to 48 hours" from Virgin.

    Go Optus.
