Optus has said that it will conduct more trials of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology before committing to offering the services to customers, despite competitors Vodafone and Telstra announcing plans to bring in 4G services in by year's end.

Vodafone today said that it plans to begin offering LTE services to consumers later this year as the company embarks on its national network upgrade. This follows on from Telstra's announcement in February that it will have LTE services up and running in a number of metropolitan and regional centres by the end of 2011.

Despite Vodafone jumping onto the 4G bandwagon, rival telco Optus stuck to its statement from February that said the company was still trialling LTE, and could not say when such services would be available to its customers.

"Optus continues to evaluate the optimum timing for rolling out commercial LTE services," Optus told ZDNet Australia. "A major consideration is the widespread availability of quality LTE devices in the appropriate spectrum bands."

"Phase 2 of Optus' LTE trial commenced earlier this year in the 1800 MHz band with the pilot trial area in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs," Optus said. "The trial is looking at a wider operational area for testing, as well as performance under load and the data interworking with the 3G and 2G networks with LTE."

    More 'yes' men spin. The market (and even Optus) know they are effectively a mobile company. Under Singtel, Pos (Paul O'Sullivan) is a lap dog to them. Their only growth is in mobiles, and this is what he has been pushing.

    They don't want to own infrastructure under Singtel, hence the reason why they want to push NBN (except mobiles). Tried to offer their HFC to NBN, who told them to shove it as it's so badly maintained and coverage not as good as Telstra.

    The problem they will run into, is that they have not bought enough spectrum, will try to roam from their 1800 to 900, but this will stuff them up on phones and the roaming. But as Optus always say "we're gonna" do this (like their 100Mbps over cable, or over power lines) and never deliver.

    On this occassion though, they will do LTE but not enough spectrum will stuff them.

  • Considering Optus made a considerable profit for 8 consecutive quarters (that's 2 years for the people who left comments before me) - I highly doubt its a finance issue.
    The spectrum for 4G is 700Mhz and 2700Mhz.
    The 700Mhz spectrum is currently being used by analog TV, which is shutting down.
    What is the point in testing the network on a frequency in which the network will not use in the end?
    Telco's promising 4G services for this year or even next year is simply a marketing stunt.
    The Federal Government has not auctioned off 4G spectrum so what ever wisher you have, you better make them again.
    Telstra or Optus may not win the spectrum auction. who knows?

    • There is spare capacity on 1800Mhz and it will be used for LTE before 2012 but not by Optus

  • A lot of networks world wide have been trialling and depolying LTE technology at 1800MHz, and yes ideally 700Mhz would be suitable but most countries don't have the spectrum clear. I have also been involved in LTE trials in 2100MHz (3G spectrum) and 900Mhz (old GSM spectrum) and due to their availablity as the OpCos currently own these frequencies it make sense as a 1st step LTE, the biggest problem will always be devices and handset at early stages new technology additional frequencies!!
