Oracle eyes OpenStack API integration, new cloud services

SAN FRANCISCO---Oracle on Tuesday said that it will integrate Nimbula Director, which was acquired in March, and leverage the OpenStack application programming interface into its Oracle Exalogic appliances.

The move, outlined in a keynote by Thomas Kurian, executive vice president of Oracle's software development, and John Fowler, executive vice president of the company's systems unit, gives OpenStack another key endorsement. HP and many others have backed OpenStack.

Exalogic racks are designed to be data center consolidation systems and primarily used to deliver private clouds. Oracle positions Exalogic as a infrastructure as a service enabler. Oracle said Exalogic will be compatible with OpenStack APIs and allow customers to integrate and manage public and private clouds.

Kurian said the ability to abstract storage and compute is critical to use Oracle's cloud services. Specifically, the standard Oracle will use is dubbed OpenStack Swift. Kurian added that compute, storage and networking will all be virtualized and OpenStack will be the management tool for most companies. The bet is that most enterprises will use private and public cloud resources in a hybrid approach, said Kurian.

"The notion we have is to give you a cloud environment, but not trying to tie you into something proprietary to manage these environments," said Kurian.

The OpenStack news comes as Oracle has refined its cloud messaging of late. The key takeaway from Oracle OpenWorld is that the company has positioned itself to be a more credible cloud player.

Indeed, Kurian noted that 21,000 companies are using Oracle's Cloud. The two big two categories are HR with 10,000 customers and another 10,000 using Oracle's customer experience CRM cloud.

Among the key points:

  • Oracle launched 10 new Oracle Cloud services including compute, storage, database, Java, business intelligence, database management, billing and revenue management and a marketplace for partners to publish applications.
  • The company also rounded out its human resources cloud features to include user interface refinements, social integration, and modules for recruiting and talent management.
  • Oracle also added a bevy updates to its social marketing cloud.
