Oracle has agreed to buy SAN-specialist Pillar Data Systems.

The acquisition, announced on Wednesday, will help Oracle fill-in its range of storage products with Pillar's set of unified SAN and NAS Axiom 600 storage systems.

"The acquisition of Pillar Data Systems provides Oracle with a compelling SAN storage architecture that complements our core strengths,” John Fowler, Oracle's executive vice president of systems, said in a statement. "Customers can optimise the value of their Oracle applications, database, middleware and operating system software by running on Oracle’s storage solutions.”

Pillar Data Systems is majority owned by Oracle's chief executive, Larry Ellison. It was founded in mid-2005 with Ellison contributing around $150m of his personal wealth to its initial war chest.

Pillar Data System's Axiom product range is a storage array available in a variety of configurations. It can optimise applications according to access and I/O rates and can also be used as a branch office SAN that replicates information back to the hub datacentre.

Prior to the acquisition, Oracle's in-house storage systems were split between the large externally-attached zettabyte file system (ZFS) Exalogic and Exadata arrays and its StreamLine tape libraries.

The transaction, for which terms were not disclosed, is expected to close in July 2011, subject to customary closing conditions.
