Parramatta gets free Wi-Fi

The City of Parramatta in Sydney's west has rolled out a free Wi-Fi service across its CBD.

Parramatta City Council is boasting that the service can reach speeds of up to 100Mbps, labelling it "5G" and claiming that it is offering the fastest wireless network speeds in Australia.

Visitors to the western suburb's CBD can access the Wi-Fi service for 30 minutes each day on any Wi-Fi-enabled device. Those who want to extend their stint on the wireless network can purchase time through internet service provider (ISP) W3 Networks. Prices have yet to be disclosed.

"As Parramatta becomes a major knowledge centre in Sydney, and society becomes increasingly mobile, it's critical we provide the city with the infrastructure workers, students, businesses, and residents need to stay connected," Lord Mayor of Parramatta John Chedid said in a statement.

Free Wi-Fi is also available at libraries across the city, as well as along the Parramatta River foreshore.

The moves follows yesterday's announcement by the Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian that Sydney's Central Station is getting free Wi-Fi, as well.

"Free internet access is a real value-add for our customers, and just one of the many initiatives being rolled out as part of the Fixing the Trains improvement we are implementing across rail," she said in a statement. "We are determined to provide services tailored to the specific needs of our customers, and this free Wi-Fi means intercity and regional customers can keep in touch with friends, family, or work."

Sessions on the free Wi-Fi network at Central are also limited to 30 minutes, with a download limit of 60MB.
