HP Compaq 6715b

HP's business notebooks come in three flavours — Balanced Mobility, Ultra-Light and High-Performance. The 6715b reviewed here comes under the Balanced Mobility heading. Notebooks in this family are currently available for as little as £345 (ex. VAT); our review model (GB835ET) is slightly more expensive at £555 (ex. VAT), but is still attractively priced.

Sony VAIO VGN-TZ11XN/B

Sony's VAIO notebooks famously combine attractive design with somewhat less attractive price tags, and the ultraportable VAIO VGN-TZ11XN runs true to form. At £1,531 (ex. VAT), this system is likely to be beyond the budget of middle-ranking mobile professionals, but it might fit the bill for more senior types seeking a classy ultraportable.

Billion Electric BiGuard S20

The Billion Electric BiGuard S20 is a VPN appliance aimed at small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), allowing remote access to applications on an office network, while also working as the firewall and internet gateway for the same network. It's a very capable unit, with many features you wouldn't necessarily expect to find on a lower-end unit, but it's let down by a difficult administrative interface and the use of ActiveX to provide some features.

iRex iLiad
At first glance, the iLiad from iRex Technologies seems to be a stunning innovation. With an innovative E-ink greyscale touch-screen and Wi-Fi connectivity for firmware updating and document download , it seems like a device with a wide range of applications. How well does it live up to this billing in the real world?
