HP announced a deal with US mass merchant Meijer to provide print kiosks in stores. By using its Snapfish online service, customers can order prints via the Web and collect them in person at a selected store, or have them mailed to their address. HP hopes to provide this service with Australian retailers in the future.

HP has also inked partnerships with Yahoo, Microsoft Live Spaces and Flickr to integrate print services directly on their sites, allowing customers to customise and print photos at home, or order copies from a professional print service.

Large-scale commercial printers such as HP's Indigo presses and wide-format Scitex printers made an appearance and printed all of the signage for the event.

The Indigo Press 5500 (above) can print 68 ppm (pages per minute) in full colour or 272 ppm in monochrome.

Also announced was the new Halo Meeting Room, a cheaper counterpart to its Halo Studio video conferencing suite.

The more price-sensitive option is US$249,000. It includes the same quality-of-service that the Halo Studio offers (running on its fibre-based Halo Video Exchange Network), however, the matching back wall, lighting kits and a document camera are sold as optional extras. It's being promoted to smaller organisations and those that may not want to invest heavily in a permanent installation.

HP claims to have sold 20 Halo studios in 22 countries to date.

SMBs also have free access to templates and advice from graphic arts designer Paula Scher. Scher is responsible for creating the Citibank and Tiffany logos, among others.

NextDayTV is a new service is being trialled by HP in the US to provide DVDs of TV shows in retail stores within 48 hours of being aired.

While it may not replace TV and the Internet as preferred distribution platforms, it might save a few relationships for those who keep forgetting to tape last night's sports game or TV show for their partner.
