  • Alpha Geeks share a lot in common with electronic hobbyists, so they also need the tools of the trade. Since its launch in 2006, Arduino has been a hit with artists, designers, and hobbyists. Ok, so what is it? It's an open source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and free software. The board can be bought or built by hand. It works by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. For example, you can use it to do the kind of Christmas light programming that gets your home on the local news. Image credit: Arduino

    Price: $25 - $29.99

  • A typical laundry machine is bulky and weighs about 175 pounds. Throw in a dryer and there is little wonder why most homes have a room dedicated to clothing maintenance. The Laundry POD changes the game. First of all, it costs nothing to operate and requires no electricity. Second, it can fit under your sink and is portable enough to take on trips, boats, and your nearest Occupy Wall Street encampment.  The hand-operated machine comes in three colors: white, green and grey. Price: $99.95

      @kloveloc@...

      The price of being an early adopter means you sometimes have to wait for products to roll off the bleeding edge. :)

        @christopher_jablonski I am aware of the facts and a gadget junkie myself, but still does not follow that this and another are holiday gifts, perhaps "after holiday" gifts, as in those gifts you buy yourself after returning the ones you got but did not want. Doesn't make a great title though...

        @christopher_jablonski It's hard to be an early *holiday* adopter on a product that isn't even available for purchase until *after* the holidays in question.

    Hmm, that may be a good idea for another guide. But there's always an opportunity to gift these items on Chinese New Year and Valentines Day.

      @christopher_jablonski Or you could just be honest and say that your editors picked the products based on complicated advertising ties and made you write about them regardless of any protestations you may have had.

      You have to earn a living, man. We aren't haters.
