The Programs and Features list before tweaking

By default, the Programs and Features list in Control Panel is a plain list, showing only four columns and sorted alphabetically by program name. With a few tweaks, we can make this listing much more useful.

For a more detailed discussion of this and other Windows Vista tweaks, see 10 top tweaks for Windows Vista, Part 1.

As the name implies, the purpose of a Complete PC backup is to back up your entire PC (or at least a full volume). It isn't intended for recovering individual files. You can, however, restore one or more files if you mount the VHD as a virtual drive using the vhdmount utility from Virtual PC or Virtual Server. Both of those utilities are available as free downloads.

Complete PC Backup
jpmtjr@... 12th Jun 2008
I like the idea of a complete Vista PC Backup but what I want to know is why they (Microsoft) does not let you backup to a Network drive.

I have a Peer to Peer Network at my home and I have a Terabyte External Hard Drive, connected to a Desktop machine, that I use to Backup my PCs to.

I know it's an old program, but for my XP machines I use PowerQuest's Drive Image v7 to perform my weekly Backups with. I received an installation error when I tried to install it on my Vista Ultimate laptop. So, I have excellent Backups of my 4 XP machines but only data files are backed up from my laptop.

Not in original design spec
Ed Bott 12th Jun 2008
My guess is that it was part of the original spec but could not be coded and tested in time for release of Vista.

Meanwhile, what I don't understand is this:

You could unplug the external drive from your networked PC for 15 minutes, plug it into your Vista machine, and do an image-based backup. When the backup is done, you could plug thbe drive back into your network.

There. All done. Why is that not an option?

So far as I can tell, the only way to verify a backup image with this MS app, is to do a restore - and if you have a corrupted image, well I guess you now have a corrupted PC.

One reason why I use True Image Home (BTW, it will also backup to a mapped network drive, but unless you have a gigabit network, it is too slow in my opinion)

Verification is part of the process
Ed Bott 13th Jun 2008
If you do a DVD backup, watch closely. It verifies each disk as it's created. (You can disable verification using the -noverofy switch.) For an HDD-based backup, the verification is done in real time by the volume shadow service.

I need some opinions...
jshewsbury@... 12th Jun 2008
I encounter problem using the Vista Complete PC Back Up

Some SQL Fatal Error message or something.

At the end I use the Nero 8 Back Up (Drive Back Up) - it takes 6 DVD to do the full back up of my HDD

However I'm curious... Is this offer the same function as the Vista Complete PC Back Up ?

I mean when someday I have problem with my computer - will this back up guaranteed that I can easily restore everything back to Normal ?

And do I need to Activate my Vista and MS-Office again ?

Can anybody give me advice/opinions on this...

Need more details

"Some SQL Fatal Error message or something"

Sorry, you'll have to actually write down the error next time.

And no, Nero Backup is not the same as Complete PC Backup, although apparently v8 (which you have) does image-based backups. You'd have to ask Ahead Software for support on this issue.

Backup or else
Chiatzu 14th Jun 2008
Vista is not supported in that old DI version from around 2003.
Ghost 14 from Symantec works with Vista or XP and is their latest
version. Ghost replaced DI, actually. It has a lot of file/disk
saving and retrieval features DI never had. Or try a trial of
Acronis True Image 11 that works for imaging, too. Might be
time to bite the bullet and upgrade your software for Vista. And
of course, always tell either program to verify your disk images
before storing them away for a disastrous day.
Time to bite the bullet and purchase Acronis. I find it's simpler for the non IT folks to deal with.

If you use Vista's backup and then have to reinstall Vista it will not recognize it's own backup file which is a VHD file. I could not get HP or MS to help me restore the file. A nighmare. Vista is garbage
