ZDNet, lets get some videos
Smarty_Pantz 27th Apr 2009
Ok, ZDNet, time to put down the latte and pull up your pants. Text is nice to glance at, but let's get a ton of 3 minute videos online to introduce users to all these new features - there's nothing like watching a recorded screen to understand software better.

And PLEASE use some clear screen technology (like Camtasia or something similar) and not a blurry-youtube-like-cant-read-a-damn-thing-on-screen technology.

ZDNet, your text and static screenshots are an ok start, but the 80's is calling and want their flock-of-seagulls haircut back...time to move forward and get this stuff on video.

I prefer the Vista-style background and icons.
Grayson Peddie 10th Mar 2009
But hey! Windows 7 is nice!

What I do miss, though, is the classy look of
Windows Media Player 11 that I did not get with
Windows Media Player 12.

I'm w/ you. The original icons look better, more mature.

I love all the Windows 7 changes ... except for the icons.

Vista had the best improvements in icons of any OS (IMHO). I can't believe they're going to abandon that great look so soon, and regress to blown-up XP-style icons. Yuck!

Vista and anything that remotely resembles Vista is dumb.

Ctrl+Alt+Del
bladedragonlord@... 10th Mar 2009
I was incredibly impressed with Windows 7 over Vista, the only thing that irked me in my couple of hours playing with it, was the Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Try it, do you really want some fancy screen and have to make YET ANOTHER step, when you are trying to end a program? Possibly you've lost the mouse as well! Not ruddy likely! Microsoft take note! Apart from that well done!

The real shortcut you're looking for...

Crtl+Shift+Esc

...or Ctrl+Shift+Esc. It's easier to do with one hand too! On a standard keyboard, press Ctrl and Shift with the side of your left thumb, and then reach up to Esc with your middle finger!

Nice icons, shame the file and network copying is still crippled like Vista.

Windows 7 is good in so many areas, but why are they still overlooking performance?

What use is a car with curtains, if it's top speed is 20mph?

How about some facts..
cgdams 10th Mar 2009
..to back up your claims concerning slow network speed?

My personal experience sure tells another story. Done a lot of copying over the network with the beta. The typical speed on my home network (100MBit) is around 12MByte/s, which is the max Speed a 100 MBit line can deliver.

And by the way, Vista SP1 doesn't perform worse...

Read Adrian's benchmark. It's faster than XP.
XP SP3 wasn't the fastest in a single category.
The newest 7 build was the fastest overall. By
a lot.

Have you heard of something called Vista SP1.. After you install it, file and network copy were significantly faster. Same with Win 7. Of course this is a typical response, or if you have added the service pack maybe you need some system optimization..

It's a good thing that Win7 performance is already largely decent because these little tweaks are kind of nothing. Typically though I'm sure lots of lame brained users will find this stuff wonderful. To me, it's a waste of effort.

We will NOT upgrade to 7 until MS fixes the SLOW file copy and download speeds. This is a REAL problem for people moving big graphic files around and, it is CORE problem with Vista and 7! Microsoft, if you want to stay in business, get it fixed! Your products are moving away from the comercial user and onto the kiddi play machine...
Why is the Tahoma font STILL showing up in dialogs (like Taskbar and Start Menu Properties)and other spots?

Is this more of a missed "fit and finish" thing or do these guys just want to violate their own UI design specs?
I think MS should get the system right before they release it and not release 4,5 or 6 versions just to confuse, demean or ripoff the public for more money. I also believe they should put some software and codexes in the system so we dont have to buy lots of extra apps to do regular every day things like watch dvd's etc.

Buy codec apps?

DVD playback has been in Windows
JoeMama_z 10th Mar 2009
Since Vista RTM, 7 will include support for MP4, MOV, AVCHD, and most other major formats.

BlueRay, Ogg, Flac, and MKV are still not supported natively.

Get VistaCodecs from http://shark007.net
They have just about all the codecs you can think of for XP, Vista, and 7.
no more aurora backgrounds we dont want to go back to old (pre)vista os's looks and some of the icons look like **** some of what i see in the beta is good but why change the looks and not fix the core i myself like vista and i have not ran into all the problems like others have but yet i dont buy store bought systems i build my own, even when it cheaper to buy pre built machines and i like media player 11 better not 12
i also dont want windows to look like a mac i like windows vista ultimate i know that some dont like eye candy but it makes for a better picture when looking around the os
Maybe I'm the only person that will probably say this but I actually welcome the added sound schemes!! I've long wondered why more weren't offered before now....

agreed, change volume with mouse wheel
Smarty_Pantz 27th Apr 2009
Yeah, I'm with you buddy,
Not being able to change the volume with the mouse wheel is THE reason I don't use it - so often into music or voice or gunshots/shooting scenes in movies are dramatically different than the average volume.

It would be so great if we could quickly lower the sound during those parts instead of scrambling to click and drag that tiny little volume button. That would be especially useful in full screen mode where you dont even see the toolbar/taskbar.
I prefer outlook express's features over and above Window Live Mail because you can separate and or dispose of emails more selectively than you can with Windows Live Mail. Multiple email names provide much more flexibility than the being restricted to only one email name.

One peeve I have about windows: Hidden things!!!

First, and worst is hiding file extensions. BAD!
Second, hiding needed folders, at least that's fixed.
There's so much more, but as long as they stop that madness, it'll get better.

Improvements required
peterbk@... 14th Mar 2009
I just wonder whether we have to pay for SP7. We, that is the faithful who have spent galore in cash and time to deal with Vista!
Why can MS not produce a better OS than eg Linux with it's 10's of thousands of programmers than a few handfuls of dedicated idealists??? The latter is free, just in case.
Lets not forget: Updates are necessary because of shoddy programming. If the answer is that Windows has become too complex to avoid mistakes, then the concept is at fault. Some US$ 50 billion should fix that. But then, who wants to spend money when you can get away with a shoddy program?

-With Open Suse,KDE 4.1,and though feature full,it was about a easy as mud to work your way around the basic features.Just to install an app'n was very confusing, and no doubt a few weeks of use what have a grounding in it's use.Life is to short and the WYSIWYG in Windows made me run back to said. And a little aside...The one good thing was, even in Ubuntu live- running in ram-that Firefox was usable without the Windows,Show Me the Disk to get the driver,to get on-line!
to many changes that not all people can follow
to manny changes that not all people can follow
I was really hoping to see the Classic Start Menu option return.
