    government is the only entity that can empty a person's pocket and make them poor. A business has to persuade you to voluntarily give them money. Well, at least in a capitalist system.

  • A tax is an involuntary levy assessed by government

    for various purposes, usually to buy votes. I know that using the emotional trigger word "tax" against a business you don't like is emotionally satisfying, but it is mentally vacant.

    @DickCheney777 Just a little FYI, Apple does not charge a tax on anything. For it to be a tax it would have to be imposed on products they do not make. Like charging for a cellphone that does not have their OS on it ;)

  I hope they re also putting in a lot of solar panels, all that glass with make it harder to heat and cool without a lot of electricity. And as both a Mac user and a designer/photographer I for one hate working in bright rooms, glare is taxing and wears people out. I'd be happier in the underground parts of the building.

    @margolies@? The entire roof is supposed to be covered in Solar panels, in an effort to generate as much power locally as possible. With any surplus being sold back to the grid.

    it appears from the drawings that much of the building is below existing ground level, also the whole building is surrounded by dense foliage (except the entry);
    so the light entering the building would be mostly indirect , soft, ambient light.
    I'm not sure what the glare/reflection effect of the curved glazing is, (it's quite an unusual design feature, given that it's the most expensive way to clad a building), but they would be double-glazed energy efficient glass to minimise heating and cooling losses.

  I am guessing once they are in it people will begin to hate it, getting form one place to another will mean transversing the whole building sometimes, part of the reason for upward designs instead of outward is to cut down on movement requirements, people will be isolating themselves form others at greater distance, imagine if you end up with a series of meeting throughout the day spread across the facility, you could find yourself running all over the place. Even if they have great plans of how they organize people it always breaks down over time. Departments move, space gets utilized thats available, departments don't all reshuffle based on who needs to be talking to who.
  
  It may look cool and I think Steve is looking for a legacy to leave but as far as productivity goes it will continue to drop as time goes on in a building like this.
  
  Watch the man made natural paths start showing up overtime in the middle of the donut as people naturally look for shortcuts to get where they need to go.

  • Bad Design - Didn't pay attention to other similar designs

    @margolies@... Clearly (pun intended) no one on the building design team has ever been in the Pentagon. To get any where you alway move to the inner ring, traverse the building to the slice you need to be in then move back out to get to where you are going. Staying on the circumference of the building takes way to long to get where you are going. Apple's design only incorporates the outer ring, very inefficient to get from one place to another. Apple will probably design a way to send you avatar electronically to fix the design problems (joking)

  Yes, I have some misgivings about the building design but it's his money and we don't have the complete story. I'll just leave it to: It's nice to see innovative architecture being used in This country instead of the UAE for a change. One thing though, over here, it's permits, environmental impact studies, etc. Over there, it's, " I want it! It's shinny and new! Cost billions? No problem! I'll let those stupid Americans pay for it! A buck a barrel will do it! it's good to be the King!" Steve Jobs is a quick learner. He'll probably get it built just from the Lawsuit from Samsung alone!
