Droid by Motorola and Verizon Wireless

A gallery of several angles of the new Droid handset by Motorola powered by Google Android 2.0 (a.k.a. Eclair) running on Verizon Wireless. The last several photos show the Droid side-by-side with the iPhone for comparison.

Front 3/4 view of the Droid. It's a boxy, industrial design, to be sure. The micro USB port is visible on the left hand side.

Front and center. The reason for the little "chin" at the front is debatable (carrier silkscreen praps?) but it houses the microphone so I guess that's something.

Right 3/4 view of the Droid. At right is the volume rocker switch with the camera shutter release button in gold on the left.

The Droid requires a positive slide up to reveal the keyboard. It's not spring loaded or assisted (like the Sidekick) in any way so it's a bit of a drag. The gold rectangle on the right is the directional pad, and the keyboard? Pretty mediocre.

The rear displays one of the Droids best hardware features: it's 5 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, auto-focus, etc. Oh and how about the Verizon and Google silkscreens?

Here's Droid with the battery door removed. What's that? A battery door? You betcha iPhone. Underneath that door is a 3.7V removable Lithium Polymer battery.

In addition to a removable battery, Droid also comes with a 16GB microSD card - two major omissions on the iPhone. The microSD slot it poorly located though, requiring the removal of the battery to access it.

My very much used iPhone 3GS next to the brand new Droid. The Droid is slightly larger than the iPhone and weighs more (6 oz. compared to the iPhone's 4.8 oz.)
