Three Samsum Spinpoint HD's in raid configuration is supported by many motherboards.

Go for it. If a disk crashes you can replace it rapidly without data loss.

My one year old 300GB Seagate ST3300555SS SAS drive is faster: 15,000rpm, 2 msec latency, 3.5 msec read-seek, 4.0 msec write-seek. Same 3Gb/s transfer rate as at VelociRaptor 300GB.

Also my year-old Fujitsu MAX3147RC SAS drive beats the VelociRaptor with the average seek of 3.3/3/8 read/write at 3GB/s transfer rate @ 15,000 rpm.

These are in a Dell 690 workstation.

Normally a SCSI drive is faster than a SATA drive. But the majority of low / mid end PCs use SATA. Go to a Big Box electronic store, I'll bet you find more SATA drives than SAS for purchase.
