openSUSE 11.0 - LiveCD tour
Not a single post I make about Ubuntu goes by without at least one of you making some comment about my distro of choice and suggesting that I try some other distro. Well, never let it be said that I don't listen to you - so this week I decided to take openSUSE 11.0 for a spin.
Just In
I'm running OpenSuSE 11 on 2 machines and love both the
KDE and GNOME desktop implementations. And, as an added
surprise, all the server bits are there as well.
If you've looked at Ubuntu or other desktop-oriented Linux,
do yourself a favor and take a look at OpenSuSE 11.
Never try another OS again
What did you think you were doing, adding a new toy to your games?
Firstly, not a toy, or an application, or an upgrade, or even another flavor of microsoft.
Secondly, did you not hear of 'backing up your data'?
This should be part of your religion, as it is with any competent or experienced IT, or PC user.
Thirdly, if you are neither of the above, read the instructions. Do a backup. It's not complicated. Don't trainwreck and come here whining.
Fourthly, finally, (only because this is boring) if you have to try something new like changing an OS for the first time, do it on a new drive (they're cheap) or at least a new partition. And while you're there do a partition image (eg Ghost), and use a multiboot, and keep your data away from the OS volume/partition/drive or whatever until you figure it out.
And don't just read this site for the pictures. You just learned a lesson, so the opinion you expressed "Never try another OS again..." comes from a shaky source.
For Linux truly to make a move to the common desktop it needs to be in a position where it just works for EVERYONE not just the few who are geeks or IT professionals but Mom & Pop who do read the (incorrect) quick start PDF and have their system hosed because someone who is a geek wrote the manual for geeks and they are clueless.
For example; The OpenSuse 11 install documentation hints that it will just recognize my Vista install but apparently, even though Vistas been out for a year or so, YAST still can't tell the difference twixt a 2000/XP and a Vista install so you won't be able to boot Vista from GRUB post-install.
Having wrestled this whole Linux/Windows dual boot beast a few times before I could hop on my trusty Vista laptop and Google a solution (couldn't do it from the new Linux install because, after all of these years, wireless still doesn't work right).
If Linux is to even put a small dent in MS or even Apple the OS needs to be user friendly and, even more critical, people need to be able to present their issues and recieve positive suggestions as to how to fix it instead of someone trying to make them feel like a moron for trying (wasn't there this SNL guy?)...
Yes I've learned a lesson.
I'm having a BIG issue with the latest version of Ubuntu not wanting to talk to my Windows network. This makes it difficult for me because I want to use the Linux box as a MySQL server. I could spend a few hours on Google and try to resolve it that way but for someone that just bought a Linux computer for the first time would have a really hard time figuring it out, even with instructions.
So disappointing too because SuSE deserves Better attention than this series has paid it.
Can anyone tell me if OpenSuse 11.x will even load?
Anyone wanting info about Linux and the "Community", Pay attention to the "Helping hand" that comes to this post...
