Easy to see why Google wants this
All roads lead to Google and advertizing.

You bet!
Google, and companies like it, have a completely different business model than software vendors like Microsoft - or OEMs like Apple or Dell.
In the long run, "you get what you pay for" and whether you pay an OEM for a computer with an OS pre-installed or you do-it-yourself and install a "free" OS, you end up committing your time and your money to those choices.
Use what you want but in the end the larger market place decides and, based upon what I've seen so far, I think Chrome OS is "a pig in a poke".

What's "pinned tabs", preciousssss?
If you please, sir, what are "pinned tabs"? I'm not familiar with that term.
Thanks!

The are Googles pathetic attemp to keep with the rest.
They couldnt figure out any way to make it really appealing so they came up with BS everybody will call a true "innovation". And since your PC will probably have resources more than enough to run all of the crappy apps it will include, they had to implement something to help you organize the mess youll face.
You pin the tabs so that they dont move. (OMFG)

NO thanks. I am not in Kindergarten.

I'm with you ...
... what the heck is this UI walkthough??? And what are these mock-ups? Looks like my daughters drew them.
What the heck has Google been doing for the last year and what are they going to take another year to finish? If they're not yet largely code-complete, they're going to struggle to complete, document, test, localize, release and ship the completed product before Xmas next year.

Agreed
ok..... I guess Ubuntu has nothing to worry about for the long term.

Im with you too.
Chrome Os = Linux for newbies.
Linux = Windows 7 dumbed down.

I think it looks pretty good...considering there is still a years worth of work to be done. If the netbooks are affordable enough, I will be buying one.

Seems like something between a netbook and a kindle.
This seems like it will be a very inexpensive wifi device. I'm sure Google knows something that I don't but this doesn't look like a big leap forward... in fact it looks to me like a big regression in technology. But I suppose the same thing could have been said of the Nintendo Wii before it was released.
Time will tell.

Seems like something between a crippled phone with a big screen and a brick
If I am within range of an wireless internet connection, a device running ChromeOS has some value, but if not, it's a dead weight.
My guess is that Google's going to "partner" with AT&T/Verizon/Sprint/whoever and give these devices away for free so long as you sign up for a 2+ year data plan costing some $50 per month from which Google gets a cut in addition to the additional revenue they earn from selling ad's targetted to those ChromeOS users whenever they're looking at their screen.
Personally, I'd rather buy a netbook and pay for a data plan. Then I can install an OS of my choosing that lets me use the client apps I want and need.
No thanks, Google.

ChromeOS = Windows with taskbar moved to top and maximized-only windows
The UI really isn't that different from Windows, just that the taskbar is at the top, and windows are always maximized (except for those "panels"). Makes sense why Microsoft resisted adding tabs to IE -- you already had the taskbar before switching between "tabs", and weren't locked into only seeing one "tab" at a time.

"Windows = Macintosh with taskbar moved to the bottom"
There's a lot more to an OS than the layout, and that can be done with Windows, anyway.
I fail to see how Chrome is any improvement to Linux. I find Gnome and KDE to be FAR superior interfaces for it. As would be GNUStep, etc., etc.
Sodbuster4119th Nov 2009 -
Indeed, I agree
My post was primarily about the UI / "experience" of using Chrome OS.
