Gallery: The World Wide Web hits 20

Summary: It's hard to believe that it was only 20 years ago when Tim Berners-Lee submitted "Information Management: a Proposal" to his supervisor - and a year later the World Wide Web was born.

    it?

  • Boy how OS X has grown up since then.

Neat to see the roots of OS X displayed in such favorable
light on ZDNET. There are some aspects of the UI I really
miss from the old NextStep/OPENSTEP days.

The Internet existed before the Web. It was menu-driven, no pictures. But it was fun! Post a question and someone would answer, usually an expert in the field. Not as dangerous as it is today. Databases existed, mostly flat-file records. We've come a long way!

  • I used the internet before it became the web

usenet, uucp ftp etc... I used them all for research
and entertainment and was awestruck even then at the
potential. When i left my research role and went into
IT (doubling my money) I tried to get people
interested in the internet... rather fruitlessly "what
will we use it for" was the cry, "we need a business
model", "I cant see a way to make money" and on and on
it went. Several years later when I left the company
they were beginning to see the potential, but I was no
longer interested in hitting my head against the wall.
    Still applies I guess

They called it W3 from the beginning. Why didn't we stick with that instead of calling it WWWWWWW...?

    P.S. Good work, ZD!
