it has to do with how the video output is handled. In the case of 4:3 video being fed over a 16:9 signal output, the device playing back the video won't stretch it. This is also the case with some lower resolution video formats, depending on the playback device. Personally, I prefer when a device leaves the video at the original aspect ratio instead of stretching the video out.

while they complain about "black bars" on some of the tvs, a lot of times that can be helped with a "view mode" or "aspect ratio" setting on the tv
