To upgrade your iPhone or iPod Touch to Apple's iOS 4 firmware, make sure you're running the latest version of iTunes on your computer. Here's a link to iTunes 9.2 from CNET's Download.com. After installation, you may need to restart your computer.

(I have 2gb used, out of 16gb.)
How long is "a short while" and "takes forever"?
10 minutes?
3 hours?
No folders?
No backgrounds?
No 1-box email?
No changes of any kind?
Then you aren't running 4.
Hi- I have I pod touch (second generation), and I updated to I OS 4- but, I don't see any folders either. Maybe the second generation doesn't get that feature? Or, how do I access the folders?
Same here. I upgraded my iPhone 3G, there were no problems, glitches or error messages. I can see no difference whatsoever to my phone. Very disappointing
I had the same problem - any solution? I left mine for over an hour, then had to go to bed, so killed it.
Does it eventually finish?

Actually I did for a brief instance. It then did the usual bit about upgrading and verifying firmware and then said 'iPhone restored to factory settings' or something similar and was followed by 'Restoring from backup', told me it had restored from 'today's' backup and restarted, restored apps, restored music and videos. Then a carrier update.
After what was probably almost 2 hrs it was done and it seems to be the same old o/s, no new features, nothing...
Has anyone else experienced this?
