Headless setup

Hewlett Packard is the first U.S. company to offer custom hardware running Windows Home Server. Here's what you get.

After you connect the MediaSmart server to the network and power it up, you connect to it for the first time by installing the connector software on a client PC, which kicks off this initial setup wizard.

Thanks for the eval!
I had already ordered the HP MediaSmart because it looked so promising on paper (and at the right price).
Your eveluation makes my anticipation level even higher!
I'll try to let you know asap how an "ordinary" citizen does with the product.

Where are our Linux fans
nucrash 12th Nov 2007
I figured they would be out in force to talk about how they could build twice the server for half of the cost.

I think there could easily become a distro built to beat this, especially with the cost of SAS disks verses SATA.

I guess you missed HP's marketing strategy! This server is designed for non-technical WINDOWS PC owners. This server povides them with a reasonably affordable easy to use media server that also provides backup capabilities without all the configuration issues associated with home built systems. Small form factor and 1TB (2 500gig SATA drives 7200RPM) drive space at $709 is very reasonable. The big bonus is low power consumption versus most Linux guys would reuse an old non-efficient pc and throw some drives in a huge case running linux server.

Thin Client Server ?
ThinkFair 13th Nov 2007
Hmmm I wonder if this WHS can be application server as well

It will be cost effective if we can install thin client server software such as ThinServer XP and share the server power to the connected PC or devices
