Internet Explorer 9 Tracking Protection: how it works

Summary: With the IE9 Release Candidate, Microsoft has taken the wraps off a powerful new privacy-protection tool. Using the Tracking Protection feature, any IE9 user can install a list of sites and substrings that it wants to block. The effect is to block third-party tracking cookies, web beacons, analytics scripts, and even ads.

When you click a link to install a Tracking Protection List, a snippet of JavaScript displays this dialog box. If you click Add List, the list is installed for immediate use by IE9.

    I don't mind a tasteful, unobtrusive, informative ad, and I understand the reasons for them. What I can't abide are the ads that smash themselves into your face with blinking, coruscating, maddeningly kaleidoscopic visual effects. So I use ad blockers. They undoubtedly block the "good" ads along with the bad, but there's no other simple way to avoid the intolerable ones.
