Office Live Workspace: File Preview

Microsoft has provided a few screen shots of its forthcoming Office Live Workspace Web extension to Office. The private beta of Microsoft's answer to Google Docs is due to start soon. In the interim, here's a look at what to expect.

The file preview capability in Office Live Workspace provides the ability to preview Microsoft Office files, in this case a PowerPoint slide, within a browser.

I have actually used this service, and although simplistic compared to a full-blown SharePoint implementation, it is a good document sharing and version-tracking website. Some things still need to be ironed out such as automatic contact syncing with existing Outlook contacts, better contacts integration and management, document editing within the browser (currently, one has to download the document on a local host, edit using MS Office, and upload the document back into the workspace), track changes support, etc.

Hey Microsoft - how about trying to do ONE thing well before foraying into the world of online apps? I knew the would be the future direction - online apps versus traditional boxed software. Just because Microsoft is doing this, doesn't mean it's the best way to go. It's not the way *I* want to go.

What if the website is down? I can;t give my powerpoint presentation. I can't access my Word/Excel files? I think not.

No thanks! Keep working on Windows 7 - and try getting it right the FIRST time.

Unless it is Smart Client

If it is Smart Client than it will work like Outlook and you will have a local cache of the files and if you have Office on that pc you could still give your PowerPoint presentation. You would just of had the ability to have some marketing maven spruce up your slides with some nice eye candy on-line.
I've actually used it. It's more of a collaboration/document sharing tool.
