The Barnes & Noble NOOKcolor is a new high resolution color display ereader that has a ton of functionality in it thanks in large part to the Android 2.1 operating system powering the device. You can use the NOOKcolor to read books, magazine, newspapers, and children's books, play games, view photos, watch movies, listen to music, browse the Internet, and much more. The Quick Nav Bar appears when you tap the bottom center icon above the Nook button. From here you can quickly navigate to the primary functional areas of the NOOKcolor.
The More button is extremely useful and will give you quick access to the last three ebooks, periodicals, and documents you read.
You have the ability to place and move around book covers on the three accessible home screen panels.
There are four different views of your library that are changed by tapping the top right icon. There are several ways to filter and view your library.
The NOOKcolor gives you lots of control and in the library you can create your own personal shelves and place the books you want on those shelves, just like your own physical bookshelves. Magazines and newspapers can also be added t your shelves.
The file browser on the NOOKcolor is much improved over previous NOOK software versions.
You can see that different types of Office documents are supported through Quickoffice on the NOOKcolor.
You get a healthy 8GB of integrated storage for content, but you can also insert up to 32GB in a microSD card to easily expand your storage. The file explorer works well at accessing this information.
You can view magazines and newspapers in your library too. There are different tabs for each of these, but remember you can always place them on your bookshelf too.
Barnes & Noble made major strides to improve the lendability of ebooks. There is a dedicated LendMe tab in your Library so you can quickly see what books you have in your collection that can be loaned out.
Reading on the high resolution color display is quite enjoyable and works great in low light conditions.
The Barnes & Noble store front has also seen some major updates and is a real pleasure to browse through on the NOOKcolor.
Sessalee is the B&N fiction expert so make sure to check out her choices before buying too many books.
There are sections along the top that give you access to focused areas of the store. The bottom also has scrollable picks and selections.
Barnes & Noble tried to make it as convenient as possible for you to find content and there are several options for browsing for titles.
This is a typical view as you browse for magazines.
You have plenty of ways to view items in the store and simply tap the upper left icon to quickly switch views.
If you tap on a specific magazine, newspaper, or book title then you can view details for that title.
There are currently 24 different newspapers you can choose to buy or subscribe too. If you subscribe the editions will be downloaded automatically and placed in your Daily Briefing area.

This is an example of another way to view the book store.
Search is powerful and will filter as you enter letters. You always have the option to search the web for the term as wel.
Extras includes games, image/video gallery, LendMe utility, music player, and Pandora music app.
Chess is included on the NOOKcolor.
You can have your Google contacts synced up or create your own on the NOOKcolor.
The only data used for contacts is their name and email address.
Crossword puzzles are supported on the device.
You can view and perform basic editing of photos.
You can double tap to zoom in or use pinch gestures to view your photos.
When you select an image for wallpaper then you need to crop it a bit.
The LendMe functionality has been significantly improved in the NOOKcolor. Check out what your friend has available to you and then you can request to borrow something.
Fill out the form to request a book loan from a friend.
Each of your friends has control over what they will allow others to see in their library.
Pandora plays well when connected via WiFi.
You can choose to bookmark the song or artist for later finding more music from them.
You can search by song, artist or composer to find songs and even create stations.
Stations can be added right from within the NOOKcolor application.
You can play various level of Sudoku on the NOOKcolor.
There are some notifications that will appear from time to time in the lower left of your NOOKcolor.
As you can see the web browsing experience is excellent and very little is taken away from the full meal deal.
You can check out specific articles and even the small font is fairly readable.
It doesn't look like YouTube video are supported on the NOOKcolor.
You can view web pages in portrait and landscape orientation and both look great.
The keyboard is even larger in landscape than it is in portrait, but again it is very usable.
There are three variations of the keyboard for numbers and punctuation.

Even in portrait orientation the keyboard is extremely useful.
You will probably spend most of your time in portrait orientation and the keyboard works well.
There are plenty of settings available to customize your device experience.
In the Device Info area you can check out battery life, available storage, and erase your NOOKcolor.
Connections are managed in the wireless settings. Once you make a successful connection you can have it remembered and used automatically the next time you are in range.

There is not much here, but I do like my 24 hour clock.
You can setup to lock your NOOKcolor in case you carry sensitive documents on it and don't want someone to read your stuff.
You can establish a four digit passcode to unlock your device.
There are a few keyboard behavior settings you can manage.
The easiest customization to make is to customize your home screen wallpaper.
You can choose convenience or added security when setting up the shop settings.
You need to enter your site login details for Facebook, Twitter, and Google to use these available services.

Here is what you will find when you tap the Content button at the bottom while reading an ebook. You can view the table of contents, notes & highlights, and bookmarks.
You can search for words and phrases in the book you are reading by tapping the bottom search button and entering text.
There are a few sharing options when you use the bottom button.
You can share your reading status with your social networks. Maybe this will motivate you to finish a book :)
Several text options let you choose a text and font that is comfortable to you.
The text looks great while reading on the NOOKcolor.
You can tap and hold on a word or selection and then see several options appear.
After a highlight is made you can choose to change the color, remove it or add a note.
A text box appears for you to add in note content.
You can share quotes from within books with your friends and social networks.
In addition to seeing the dictionary definition, you can choose to look up the word in Wikipedia or Google through a wireless data connection.

Google Reader is very functional in the web browser, but make sure you use the iPhone version at www.google.com/reader/i
You can have up to 8 open windows in the web browser.

This is the full Twitter site in the browser. You may also want to try out the mobile version of Twitter.

ArticleView really is the best way to read magazine articles on the NOOKcolor.
You can use the bottom thumbnail previews to quickly navigate through a magazine.

When there are multiple articles on a page, you will see a drop down selector box to choose an article to read in ArticleView.
You can also read magazines by scrolling and zooming dynamically.
ArticleView works in landscape and portrait orientations.
You have text formatting options available to you when you read magazines, similar to when you read books.
You can also view the table of contents for a magazine and navigation through this method. Bookmarks can also be saved and accessed on the NOOKcolor.
Reading children's picture books is a very enjoyable experience on the NOOKcolor.
The book can be read to you or you can read it yourself.
Kids like to read books over and over so Barnes & Noble provides a quick button to start over.
You can zoom into pictures and discover what's in your books. New interactive features will come in 2011 too.
This book doesn't have the read aloud support, but can be read by your child.
The music play is basic, but works well on the NOOKcolor.
