Volvo's futuristic 3CC, which seats three, is propelled by a quiet electric powertrain, so it has zero emissions. The electric power comes from lithium-ion cells, identical to those used in laptop computers, that are packaged in the vehicle's floor. The 3CC can accelerate to 62 mph in about 10 seconds.

The 3CC prototype won the first-annual Solutia Design Award at this week's show. It nabbed the award in part for the use of three transparent panels in the roof that block the gain of solar heat.

BMW used the LA show to unveil its newest luxury sedan, the M6, a super coupe with a 500-horsepower V10 engine and seven-speed transmission. Its top speed: 155 mph. Its price tag: $96,795.
