IBM Researcher Ronald Ridgeway examines a blade server using the Cell processor, which was codeveloped by Big Blue with Sony and Toshiba.
IBM demonstrated the Cell blade on Wednesday in New York. It hopes the technology will boost visual graphics for customers in the fields of entertainment, medical imaging, aerospace and defense.
The JS21 blade
IBM's new JS21 blade uses the dual-core PowerPC 970MP processor, which not only has two processing engines but also has features that let multiple operating systems run side-by-side on the server. That, in turn, lets servers be used more efficiently.
IBM introduced its second-generation blade server chassis Wednesday, the BladeCenter H. New features include a higher-speed internal communications pathway, faster network options and new automated management features.
