The professional security crowd meets annually for the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, and this year's confab features ATM hacking and insecure electric meter reading, along with the latest in securing users from software vendors like Mozilla and Qualys.

You don't even need to hack most of the ATMs you find in convenient stores. In California there was a man who simply looked up the user manuals for those generic ATMs that Barnaby Jack had up on stage. The man found out that most of the ATM owners never changed the default password, so he just went to different ATMs, went into configuration mode, set the machine to think the $20 bills are $5 bills, then withdrew the maximum amount, quadrupling his money.

He walked away with tens of thousands of dollars before being caught. He kept hitting the same ATMs over and over again, so naturally the police caught on.
