Here's the leaderboard of the 12 top android smartphone picks by Jason Hiner of TechRepublic.

Caveat: This ranking is primarily US-based. In each country/region, the telecom carriers tend to name these devices by different names. In many cases you’ll be able to find a close match between the devices on this list and devices in your area, but not in all cases.

HTC EVO 4G: “The Hummer of smartphones” because it’s so huge and it’s such a power hog, but there’s no denying that it is the elite of the Android fleet."

@m3kw9 I count many more than 20. Wikipedia lists at least 60+ Android phones... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Android_devices
--I know some are non-US or country specific, and others might be old, but saying there are only 20 Android phones that are available to consumers is a bit of a stretch. Saying something like 'there are only 4 iPhones' is much more realistic.

I'm following this topic closely, because my old HP Voice Messenger with the WM Pocket PC OS is nearing the end of its run. However, I need a phone that I can use with my Italian prepaid plan, so it must be available unlocked. I've been looking at the Motorola Milestone, but would be pleased to know of other candidates.

If you would included a little note next to each phone with this information, I would be very grateful!

Estimated battery life for each phone would also be useful.

@bvlenci
I am pretty sure Nexus One is available in unlocked mode. My friend bought it and is using it with AT&T (Nexus One is available on T-Mobile).

THere are like 20 android phones out there and you choose 10?!

@m3kw9 suppose you would see 20 if it was "best 20" but they chose "best 10" seemed self explanatory

@nuthole I think m3kw9 is saying that choosing 10 out of 20 does not really narrow down the field.

Dell Streak - the unique formfactor
richard.e.morton@... 14th Sep 2010
The Dell Streak is an amazing formfactor. Half-phone, half-tablet and completely portable; nah, really I have mine on me everywhere, it fits in my jeans pocket I use it for music, video, web-browsing, emailing (both corporate and personal), calendar, a few games and even as an e-reader (the screen size being essentially the same as a page in a paperback book - I use it inversed colours, white on black with Aldiko).

Its a unique formfactor and with Android 2.1 (and now open-source drivers) worthy of a place in the top 10.

How come you've got one phone twice?
Wolfie2K3 14th Sep 2010
The T-Mo branded Vibrant and the AT&T branded Captivate are both essentially the same Samsung Galaxy S phone - with just a different brand on the case.

For that matter, where's the CDMA version? You know, the Verizon Fascinate and Sprint Epic 4G...

@Wolfie2K3 The Epic 4G is on there. It's listed as having the best keyboard of any Android phone (not that that's saying much). They just left the Fascinate off the list. Had they put any of the Motoblur phones on the list I would've puked.

I do agree that the Streak doesn't get enough love from the Android community. I guess all the Android users have small hands.

I've owned a Nexus One since 45-60 days after its release. I love certain capabilities of the phone like the ability to tether my laptop to my phone (which I'm doing right now) and use my T-mo unlimited data to surf the web. There are several problems with the phone that don't make it the real competitor to my Iphone 4 that it should be. My phone still has OS glitches and freezes up or becomes unresponsive too much. My biggest gripe with it is that it is a horrible phone. It drops calls all the time and I'm a dedicated bluetooth user now because I can't talk on it holding it in my hand (no signal or dropped calls). From what I have heard its because the antenna is in the bottom of the phone. HELLO HTC! That's just DUMB! It has greatly hampered my enjoyment of the phone that I paid over $500 for. Some of the issues I'm having Google/HTC should have had resolved before this made it onto the market.
