Amazon gives you lots of free storage, 20GBs, but you can only get it to through your Web browser and you need to use Flash to upload files. I find it clumsy.

  • Syncplicity

    I've used Syncplicity.com for about 4 years now. I started with it because it appeared to have better security and better pricing than the alternatives. I've stayed with it because it's been seamless, quick (after initial setup) and exceptionally reliable. It's allowed me to readily synchronize and backup multiple computers, and make specific folders and files available to customers as needed. I think it was also the first of these services to enable access via mobile devices as well. I don't have current experience with the alternatives, but I've had no reason to evaluate them given the good experience with Syncplicity. Why it isn't more widespread is a mystery to me.

  • Ubuntu 1 also works on Mint

    I checked Synaptic on Linux Mint once and found Ubunti One since it had the corresponding Ubuntu repo listed. It worked. It should work with other Ubuntu off springs also. There are apps for Android and iPhone.

  • Please Read The Terms of Service, FAQs and Privacy Rules

    It's amazing that most people are willing to use these services just for the shear usefulness of the services. If one was to read the TOS for Google Docs or for Dropbox, you would find out that not only is your data "unprotected" by these services, they actually state that they have a right to read your data, modify it, create abstracts of it and publicly display all of "your stuff". Not only that, but by using those services, you also claim to have the right to give those rights to the service. You don't care? What if you are in the medical field and you want to use these to store patient records? Isn't that illegal? Are these services HIPAA/HITECH compliant? Some say, in their FAQs, that they are not responsible for your HIPAA compliance. And how can they be HIPAA-compliant if they allow their employees to read your stuff?

    I'm not saying don't use public cloud services but you should really check to see if your stuff will be read by others and who these people are. Even third-party affiliates? Advertisers?

    We know by now that Twitter isn't "safe". When two people are tweeting each other in England and their tweets are being shipped to the Department of Homeland Security in the U.S. (resulting in the temporary arrest and deportation of the two youths) a bell should go off as to who gets to look at your uploads and if it is all OK with you.

  • You missed Box.net

    I use box.net. I was one of the lucky few who got in on their 50gb free for life membership deals, so I can store far more there than anywhere else, and ive never spent a cent on it. Plus it's fast, reliable, easy to use, and accessible via mobile apps (iOS for sure, idk about android). Unfortunately, no OS integration (yet, that I know of), but still - its free so no complaints :D.

    • Love/Hate with Box

      Like you, I was lucky enough to get the 50gb Box account (which is awesome in itself). However the OS integration which is only available from Corporate/Enterprise accts leaves a lot to be desired. Also I wasn't too found of the fact that you can't upload more than 100mb of data at a time on the personal accts. If they can fix that, they might be more popular.

  • Security for data storeage

    Companies using mt data and photographs is one of the things that is at the top of my mind when I look for a backup solution. Thats why I eventually decided on Gotabackup.com. They don't read or use my data and my account is unlimited. All very cheap and easy. I don't trust Google at all as they have a history of using information at will.

    i use gotabackup too. i was stuck on free services for a while but bit the bullet and went for a paid service unfortunately it was awful, cost way too much but then i tried gotabackup and they offered the exact same service. the price was almost too good to be true but ive been with them three motnhs and really happy so alls good

  • I like this one

    I use Carbonite, at 60.00 a year, $5/month. Backs up your selected files on one computer in the background. Unlimited storage. Access from any computer and iPad, perhaps others, because I don't have any other devices. Adds and deletes files as necessary.

  • Dropbox for me

    I use dropbox to collect data & pics from all sources. Thats 3 PCs, iPad2, Notebook, iPod and Android Phone. Once a month I empty out and back up everything to an external drive and start again. 2Gb is ample at the moment for me and Dropbox works great with every os including Win7, XP, Linux, iOS and Android.
