Spiceworks

ZDNet UK is now recommending an App of the Day. It seems only polite, now we have our own app, to take a deeper look at this lively area of mobile tech — and, of course, we'll do it with the needs of enterprise IT at the top of the list.

1. Spiceworks
A free client for Spiceworks's free cloud-based IT management system, this app provides a basic but growing set of tools for classic IT management tasks like ticket viewing, inventory and so on. It also lets you participate in discussons with other IT pros. The app is free for iPhone and Android.

Document Reader

2. OpenOffice Document Reader
Add ODT and ODS file viewing to almost any app. This app keeps docs open where you read them last, has a very usable condensed viewing format, and does a simple job well without taking up tons of resources. The OpenOffice Document Reader is available for free on Android.

Astrid Todo List

4. Astrid Task/Todo List
You may think there's nothing to be done about the stark, work-focused sterility of to-do lists, but Astrid begs to differ. A simple interface and a wry sense of humour make this about as engaging as possible, and a wide variety of useful options lessen the pain even more. Available for free on Android.

WorkSnug

5. WorkSnug
WorkSnug for iPhone is an augmented reality app that helps people on the move find an ideal place to set up and work. The app connects to a database of tolerable makeshift workstations, such as libraries and cafes, taking into account their Wi-Fi connections, noise levels and atmosphere. WorkSnug also recently teamed up with HP to guide users to the nearest public printer on HP's ePrint network. Users can even submit their reviews of locales recommended by the app to keep its database up to date. The features 15 locations worldwide so far, including London and Brighton.
