Pat Gelsinger, general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group, holds a four-core "Clovertown" Xeon processor, a model that will ship in November. Gelsinger spoke Wednesday at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.

Susan Whitney, general manger of IBM's System x business, said Wednesday that IBM has committed to a fourth-generation chipset to build high-end x86 servers using quad-core models of Intel's Xeon processor.
