Seagate refreshes enterprise SSDs and disks
Seagate Pulsar XT2
Seagate has added to its enterprise product range with five new products, including its first enterprise-focused high performance solid-state drive.
The announcement comes after a shift in the competitive landscape in the storage market, as Western Digital announced its plan to buy Hitachi's storage arm, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, in early March.
The two new members of the Pulsar solid-state drive (SSD) family — the Pulsar.2 and Pulsar XT2 (pictured) — are designed for applications requiring high storage capacity and high throughput.
The Pulsar.2 is a 2.5-inch multi-level cell (MLC) solid-state drive with 6Gbps SAS or Sata interfaces. It comes in 100, 200, 400 or 800GB versions, and it is guaranteed for 8TB of full drive writes per day for its five-year lifespan.
Both Pulsars use Seagate-designed interface controllers. The Pulsar.2 contains error-correction technology from Seagate's joint development and licensing agreement with Samsung.
The Pulsar XT.2 is a single-level cell (SLC) with 6Gbps SAS and 100, 200 or 400GB of storage. It is capable of up to 48,000 random read input/output per second operations (IOPS) in 4KB blocks, and has a promised peak data transfer rate of 360MB. By comparison, Hitachi GST's Ultrastar family of SSD drives are capable of 46,000 read IOPS, but 500MBps write.
The Pulsars do not use PCI Express (PCIe) interconnects, unlike their predecessors. Seagate declined to disclose prices.
Seagate Savvio 10K.5 and Savvio 15K.3
Seagate also updated its enterprise Savvio family with two 2.5-inch hard-disk drives (HDDs).
The Savvio 10K.5 (left) is available in 300, 450, 600 and 900GB variants. It uses either 6Gbps SAS or 4Gbps Fibre Channel for connectivity. It has a spindle speed of 10,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and has three HDD platters.
The Savvio 15K.3 (right) spins at 15,000 RPMs, has two platters and is available in 146 and 300GB formats. It has a 64MB cache and uses 6Gbps SAS.
Seagate Constellation ES.2
The 3.5-inch Constellation ES.2 is Seagate's highest-capacity enterprise HDD at 3TB. It is available with either 6Gbps SAS or Sata connectivity, has a 64MB cache, five platters and greater aerial density than previous generations.
The drive also has a new Raid Rebuild feature, which will be applied to existing Constellation drives as well, in time, Seagate said. The drive is shipping to original equipment manufacturers such as Dell and HP, and should be available by the second quarter of 2011.
