Primus upgrades fibre

Primus Australia has introduced Optical Transport Network (OTN) capabilities to its existing fibre network in Australia, completing the first stage of its Metro Fibre project which spans the top five capital cities in the country.

The OTN technology enables bandwidth sharing, which will allow more customers to be brought on to each fibre ring. Previously, large enterprise customers that had high level requirements would have to have fibre dedicated to them to meet their needs.

The enhancements have been initially focused in Sydney and Melbourne, which are expected to be completed early next year. The upgrades will then branch out to Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth through 2012, with plans to expand to Canberra afterwards.

The project has been running since the beginning of August, when Tom Mazerski was appointed as the company's new CEO to replace Ravi Bhatia.

The upgrade will use the Huawei OSN 8800 platform, which Primus said will allow the delivery of high speed, low latency inter-capital bandwidth built on the shortest routes available. It expects datacentres and financial institutions to be among some of its customers.

Mazerski said: "We are very proud of the work we have done to bring our new network from the original designs through to fruition with our first customers coming online this quarter. Primus Metro Fibre will now be positioned to penetrate new market segments in the key capital cities through offerings of high demand, leading-edge products and services."
