Qualcomm announces next-generation Snapdragon 805 "Ultra HD" processor

Chip maker Qualcomm has added the next generation mobile processor to the Snapdragon 800 line up, the Snapdragon 805. The new processors are designed to deliver the highest-quality mobile video, imaging and graphics experiences at Ultra HD (4K) resolution, both on devices and via Ultra HD TVs.

The new Snapdragon 805 features a Krait 450 quad-core CPU, where each core can run at up to 2.5GHz, along with the new Adreno 420 GPU, which offers up to 40 percent more graphics processing power than its predecessor.

All this means the Snapdragon 805 processor is the first mobile processor to offer system-level Ultra HD support, 4K video capture and playback and enhanced dual camera Image Signal Processors (ISPs), which brings with it superior performance, multitasking, power efficiency and mobile user experiences.

The Snapdragon 805 also integrates with either the Qualcomm Gobi MDM9x25 or the Gobi MDM9x35 modem, allowing for a seamless connected mobile experiences. The Gobi MDM9x25 chipset, which was announced in February 2013, has seen significant adoption as the first embedded, mobile computing solution to support LTE carrier aggregation and LTE Category 4 with superior peak data rates of up to 150Mbps.

The Snapdragon 805 also integrates with the 2-stream dual-band Qualcomm VIVE 802.11ac, to allow support for wireless 4K video streaming and other media-intensive applications with minimal impact on battery life.

"Using a smartphone or tablet powered by Snapdragon 805 processor is like having an UltraHD home theater in your pocket, with 4K video, imaging and graphics, all built for mobile," said Murthy Renduchintala, executive vice president, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and co-president, QCT. "We're delivering the mobile industry's first truly end-to-end Ultra HD solution, and coupled with our industry leading Gobi LTE modems and RF transceivers, streaming and watching content at 4K resolution will finally be possible."

The Snapdragon 805 processor is sampling now and is expected to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2014.

  • Coming to devices near you: 4K Resolution

    Wow Adrian,
    I really did not expect 4K-UltraHD to move into mobile devices so quickly, but it certainly is a welcome development; especially for phablets such as the Galaxy Note III, should they decide to implement this. They will, of course.

  • When...

    reviewers are saying that you can't really tell the difference between HD and FullHD on a 5" handset, why would you want 4K on a handset? Even with the iPhone, I really had to look long and hard to see a difference between my 3GS and a 4 with Retina display.

    Even at 10" I can't really see the point, WQHD probably doesn't bring that much over FullHD at that size for most people.

      With this there will be no visible difference. Just more power consumption and heat.

      But Samsung WILL do it, as they are always happy to treat their customers as idiots.

    If UHD TV's are anything to gage what the difference is and will be in the real world, then bring this tech to my new phone sometime soon.
    Will this new breed of high performance, high resolution mobile device suddenly make the likes of the PS4 and the new Xbox redundant.
