Qualcomm is currently contemplating using the spectrum assigned to its MediaFLO service to serve mobile data.

Last Friday, the chipmaker and service provider, said that it was in discussions with mobile and media operators to use the chunk of UK 'L-band' spectrum that it owns to serve data to mobile devices.

Qualcomm would not just be hiring out a dumb stretch of spectrum, EETimes reported, as it also demonstrated a variety of services for mobile devices that could be served using MediaFLO technology.

The future of MediaFLO is currently in doubt and Qualcomm has been mulling a sell-off of the service. But even if it sells the platform, it will still have the 40Mhz of UK spectrum that it bought for £8.3m in 2008 with "no end date" to the lease.
