Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 offers 75 percent faster charging

Summary: Qualcomm's new technology can take a battery from flat to 20 percent in 12 minutes, and fully charge it in a little over an hour and a half.

I don't know about you, but I get a little bit anxious when my battery gets down to around 20 percent, and I break out in a cold sweat when it dips below the 10 percent mark. At this point I know that I'm going to have to find a charging point, and that my device is going to be tethered to it for some time.

Enter Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 technology, the next generation of fast charging technology for smartphones, tablets and larger mobile computing devices like slim notebooks.

It works by using an intelligent system to shunt as much as 60 watts of power down the power cord and into the battery, as opposed to around the 9 watts which most chargers are capable of putting out. The results are quite astounding. Below are comparisons for different charging methods for a 3300mAh battery:

Interested? Qualcomm will start selling Quick Charge 2.0 later this year, and this will be backward-compatible with all smartphones and tablets fitted with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor as this has the necessary circuitry to control the charging.

Qualcomm hopes to take things further by integrating Quick Charge 2.0 technology into standard micro-USB AC/DC wall chargers. These chargers will look and work like standard chargers, but will be able to deliver Quick Charge to compatible devices.

Qualcomm claims it is already working with leading AC/DC chipset suppliers and their AC/DC power supply partners to fully enable the power supply ecosystem.

Very interesting technology, and worth keeping an eye on.

  • looks pretty cool

There are already alot of chargers that can charge phones pretty fast, as long as you have atleast 1000mah output... But if they can reduce the charging duration by so much then.... That would be even better obviously.
  • The faster you charge it, the quicker you destroy the battery

There is no way around this physical problem of fast charging. It can reduce charge cycles by a LOT!
Best solution is a removable battery and swapping in a charged up spare.
Get a phone that has removable battery, carry a spare and you won't feel nervous when it gets low.
  • Quick death 2.0?

@Warboat yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking.
