Review Summary: Prior to the release of the Go 720, TomTom lacked a true high-end model in its New Zealand line up. The previous top model - the One XL - was an excellent device in its own right (not to mention outstanding value for money), yet it lacked some of the...

Review Summary: GPS units are becoming very popular with drivers who commute on a daily basis. We've been testing the TomTom GO 720 unit over the past month and it's an excellent choice. Here's what we had to say.

The Verdict: Overall, the TomTom GO 720 is a great alternative to the Magellan Maestro 4040 we reviewed in July of 2007. It is $50 cheaper at $449.95 and has better battery life but it has the media playback capabilites that the Magellan doesn't have. The Magellan...

Rubbish!!!!!
njmpm Updated - 10th Aug 2009
I originally purchase a tomtom go 720 to have the thing totally crash within the year warranty period. I sent it in and it was replaced with a referbished unit. I have since used the device about 4 times since replacement and its frozen again. It wont reset or isnt being recognised by my computer. It is a couple of months out of the warranty now and tom tom want to charge me $90 to just look at it!!!!! This unit is rubbish and I advise anyone considering purchasing a tomtom not to and buy another brand. Mine is going in the bin as we speak as im not forking out a couple of hundred dollars to get another referb unit that will only last a month at the most. Do yourself a favour and buy from another company.
PS: This review says that i give it a 1 out of 10 which is also rubbish as i score it a 0
The Tom Tom 720 is a nice unit BUT, don't waste your time or your money......the bottom line is that once the battery dies or loses its charging capacity, Tom Tom won't provide a replacement battery.

According to Tom Tom customer service, after the 1 year warranty, they cannot and will not replace your battery. They also said all of their units are built the same way and that they won't replace or sell batteries for those either.

That business decision makes all of the Tom Tom units as good as useless. I had read once that the battery would only accept a certain # of charges before it became useless and would no longer hold a charge; I guess it was true.

If you're using a smart phone, google maps will provide turn by turn navigation..FOR FREE!

Never again....no more TomToms
CFPINFL Updated - 29th Apr 2010
I really liked my TomTom GO 720. I had it for a little over a year when it stopped working. I contacted TomTom and they told me there was nothing to be done to fix it. They said I would need to purchase a new one (nice gig, there TomTom). So, $300 gets you something that only lasts for a bit over a year. It's not like I used it everyday either. They must be joking....I will never purchase another TomTom product as long as I live.

I am with the previous reviewer...."1" is too good for TomTom.

Very nice device. The map color scheme makes it very easily to decipher where you're going. I do have to warn you, that once you update the device using the dock, the device may start giving you bad directions to "Point of Interests" located in its directory (gas station, etc.). The device works best when you're certain that you know the street address of the location you are trying to reach!
I'm talking about a different Tom Tom GPS than this model but this was my experience overall with this brand.

First, their so called GPS kept locking up on me frequently. I would have to wait until I got home to hook the thing up to the computer to reset everything.

Second, their service was abysmal. They never fixed the problem. They just kept feeding me the same, pat, out of the manual answers.

Third, I took a chance and paid for advanced maps software thinking that maybe this would resolve the issue once and for all. Not only did the new software also freeze up frequently, Tom Tom never got it working once properly over the next three weeks of back and forth, almost daily correspondence. When I finally got fed up and asked for a refund (just) on the new software I was told it was past their two week policy of allowing refunds.

I gave them plenty of chances to fix their product and they screwed me over.

Completely unreliable product, one of the worst support experiences ever, and an unethical company to deal with.

I've since bought a Mio GPS (in Europe) and a Garmin GPS (in North America). Both proved to be very reliable products.

FUBAR! It would be fine for someone in EU but not US. This thing can't find 2 out 3 addresses or routes me around Cape Horn to get there. I depend on my Garmin 62st; it's a bit more of a PITA to program an address but very dependable and upgrades and updates are a breeze.

I don't know how good the update service in there in the UK but here it is SNAFU.

RE: TomTom GO 720
daveoaa@... 28th Dec
I live in the Uk and have always bought Tom Tom,s when Ive upgraded.
About 2 years ago I Purchased my Tom Tom 720 and loved its sleak compacted look.
I bought several items to go with my Tom Tom 720 including a carrying case, dash mount, (not cheap) and a new car charger
I havent used my tom Tom more than 20 times since new and yesterday I tried to charge it up and it wouldnt hold its charge.
I changed the wall charger and usb cable and tried to charge it, I left it on charge for 24 hours and it still wont hold its charge.
Its fine whilst its pluged into my car or wall charger and it works fine.
But when I try to use it on it own the battery indicator shows flat and it shuts down on boot up.
Im sure its the battery thats gone kaput.
Im guttered that after only using it a few times since ive had it the battery has died.
Ive been on Ebay and there are battery,s for sale that fit the Tom Tom 720 so im going to buy one and fit it myself.
Ive read the fitting instruction it gives on the internet so im going to give it a try.
I will never purchase another Tom Tom again.
Sorry im rubbishing the company but in my opinion thats what I think of them.
Total crap,waste of Money.
