Software support provider Rimini Street is launching a contest amid Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco next week. On the surface, it looks pretty straightforward with the social angle and all, but it's also a bit cheeky.

The Las Vegas-based company has bought up ad space on the tops of San Francisco taxi cabs, enticing anyone who sees them to tweet the messages to win a prize -- including the hashtag "#OOW."

Rimini Street offers third party maintenance for Oracle and SAP applications at lower cost. Obviously, Rimini is looking to land a few customers and get under Oracle's skin.

The ploy could work -- especially since the two sides will duel in court over third party maintenance.

Rimini's promotion is also reminscent of Oracle's tactic of buying up nearly all of the signage (not already bought up by Salesforce.com) in downtown San Francisco during Dreamforce '12 last week. So really, it's all a bit of a game.

The prizes are worth a tweet or two as well, ranging from $25 gift cards for vendors such Amazon and Starbucks to a daily $250 Visa gift card giveaway.

Here's the rundown on the rules:

  1. Tweet one of the Taxi-top Slogans RiminiStreet has eight different marketing messages that will be displayed on top of Taxis in central San Francisco. Tweeting one of these messages, followed by the hashtag #OOW, will consist of an entry. Up to eight entries can be made per day per twitter account, and each entry must consist of a different taxi-top message.
  2. Follow @RiminiStreet on Twitter Each new follower counts as one registration. A person can register once via a follow.
  3. Tweet a picture or video of a taxi topper to @RiminiStreet using the #OOW hashtag. Each photo or video tweet adds to your chances to win. Up to eight entries can be made per day per twitter account, and each entry must depict a different taxi-top message.

For anyone interested in participating and will be in San Francisco next week, note that the contest only runs from Monday, October 1 through Wednesday, October 3. For a closer look at the contest, check out the promo video below:
