Salesforce launches free version of Chatter

The popular business-based social networking platform will be extended to company employees whose roles do not require a Salesforce licence

Salesforce.com has announced the release of Chatter Free, a no-fee version of the business-orientated social messaging platform.

Chatter Free will extend the Facebook-like, Twitter-like feature in Salesforce to everyone within a company — even those whose roles do not require a Salesforce licence. This provides an opportunity to see how the service can be used outside of the typical departments, notably sales. The move was annouced on Tuesday at the company's Dreamforce conference in San Francisco.

Salesforce has seen strong take-up of Chatter since rolling it out to general availability earlier this year. In that time, more than 60,000 companies have deployed it.
