Korean electronics giant Samsung is delaying the launch of a new Android device powered by Google's latest mobile operating system (OS), Ice Cream Sandwich, indefinitely, saying it is not the "right time" to be announcing it while the world "expresses tribute" to the passing of Apple's founder Steve Jobs.

According to a Reuters report on Sunday, Samsung had planned to introduce its new device at its Mobile Unpack event in San Diego on Tuesday. The handset would have been the first to showcase the Ice Cream Sandwich OS, which will allow developers to create apps that could be optimized for both smartphones and tablet devices, it added.

A Samsung spokesman told the news agency: "We decided it was not the right time to announce a new product while the world was expressing tribute to Steve Job's passing."

He added that the company has yet to decide on a new launch date for the device.

The Apple co-founder and Chairman succumbed to his various health ailments, notably a seven-year struggle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer, last Thursday. Since then, people from across the globe have paid their tributes to the man credited for turning modern day computing on its head.
