The Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime will support download speed up to 225 Mbps
According to multiple telecom sources familiar with Samsung’s internal plans, the new handset will support 225 Mbps, which is three times faster than conventional long-term evolution’s (LTE) 75 Mbps.
Sources stressed that it was for the local market only and that they didn’t know whether the global version will support such speeds.
Samsung and local telecoms are “still discussing details,” one of them said, declining to share specific launch dates or the official name of the gadget.
Currently, the fastest download speed in Korea is 150 Mbps, available through LTE-Advanced, and achieved by aggregating two 10 Megahertz spectrums.
However, SK Telecom, Korea’s largest carrier, demonstrated download speeds of 225 Mbps last year. The company aggregated a 20 Megahertz spectrum with a 10 Megahertz one to increase speed. Back then, no smartphones could support that speed and the carrier used a notebook for demonstrations.
Last year, soon after the launch of the Galaxy S4, Samsung released the Galaxy S4 LTE-Advanced as soon as networks were able to support the increased speed.
One of the sources said "to his knowledge" that Samsung ordered 1 million modem chips “recently" from US chip giant Qualcomm.
Qualcomm’s MDM 9635, released last year in November, is the only modem chip today that supports three bands. Sources say they finished development in April.
A Samsung spokesman declined to comment.
