Samsung wants to bring 5G online by 2020

Samsung Electronics is said to have developed the core technology for 5G wireless networks, after it managed to successfully transmit data at a speed of 1 gigabits per second (Gpbs).

Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday the South Korean electronics giant had cracked the 5G network conundrum for the first time, as it looks to offer services which would allow users to download and upload data at speeds of up to over 10Gbps by 2020. In other words, offering consumers the ability to download an entire movie in less than a second, it said.

Its confidence comes from the successful trial of using the 28 gigahertz (GHz) bandwidth to transfer data at a speed of 1Gpbs.The key was in using 64 antenna elements that allowed the device to exchange real-time signals with the 5G network platform, it explained.

By comparison, 4G LTE networks data transfer speed only reaches 75 megabits per second (Mbps), the report noted.

The development of 5G is of keen global interest. The United Kingdom, for one, had in April taken its first steps toward introducing the next-generation network when regulator Ofcom initiated a "call for input" from the industry to look into ways of clearing the 700MHz spectrum band, possibly for the use of 5G data services.

    Now to invent something that could use that transfer rate. This has to be business needs right?? I mean 4g is Already over kill - HSPDA+ exceeds mobile needs.

    Could they work on increasing signal coverage instead please?

    Mobile devices are accelerating to an "all the fear, no idea" status; beefed up on steroids, multi giga quad cores, gigs of ram, discrete quality graphics, instant data transfers, while the app makers continue to push things to such dizzying heights as tapped out and candy crush, and the networks charging 50 quid a month for two years struggle to get even 3G signal strength up to demand.

        I was more mocking the ability of infrastructure to keep up with the tech than the tech itself.

        Yes they say by 2020 they can go 10 tomes faster than what they've just made.

        My point was that the networks still haven't got full innercity coverage of the 10 year old 3d spectrum, and that poor mast provisioning means that whilst you may get 3g, you may also get heavily bottlenecked because too many people work in london for example...

        Without issues such as that addressed, this tech will fall into the same hole

    I think 10GB internet is already available in the corporate world with T1 lines. It'll be nice to have it for home use, though.
