Seagate is never one to skimp on the hyperbole, frequently touting each and every creation as the world's greatest/thinnest/fastest something.

The latest entry rolling out from the American storage solutions maker is making good out of its specific Samsung hard disk drive department.

At just 9.5mm thin, Seagate is pegging the Spinpoint M9T as the world’s thinnest 2TB, 2.5-inch hard drive.

The Spinpoint M9T will also support a smaller storage capacity of 1.5 terabytes. As for speed, the Spinpoint M9T sports a SATA 6Gb/s interface.

Although not declared as the world's quietest HDD model, the Spinpoint M9T could be close to the mark with NoiseGuard and SilentSeek technologies installed for "ultra-quiet operation."

The Cupertino, Calif.-headquartered company is aiming to have these super-slim HDDs embedded on consumer external drives that will likely be linked up with desktop and laptop PCs as well as gaming systems.

For now, the Spinpoint M9T hard drive is being made available through Samsung's Portable external HDD brand, which includes models offering storage between 500GB and 3TB in capacity.

  • Thinnest?

Aren't the spaces these would go into, standard? Or by making this now, a laptop vendor can now make the laptop thinner? Chicken and egg?

Thinner external drives for now with manufacturers being able to take advantage later.
