Canonical updates Ubuntu Landscape management platform

Canonical has enhanced the systems management tool for Ubuntu desktop, servers and cloud instances. Landscape is available as part of Ubuntu Advantage subscription and has been updated with roles-based access control, better compliance reporting, a robust API, bare metal provisioning and enhanced integration with Ubuntu 12.04, the company said.

iOS LogMeIn Ignition update adds file-system access

An update to the LogMeIn Ignition app for iOS devices, such as the iPad 2, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch, now allows users to perform file-management tasks, in addition to remotely accessing the desktop of other computers.The new version of the iOS app allows users to directly access a computer's file system to view, move, edit, or copy files and folders to a local device for offline viewing.

Oracle releases Cloud API

Oracle has released a cloud API and submitted part of it to a standards organisation.On Wednesday the company released a general Oracle Cloud API, and submitted a subset of the API — the Oracle Cloud Elemental Resource Model API — to the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), a standards body.

Looking Into Electronic Document Management Systems

Simply put, an electronic document management system (EDMS) is a system that can replace paper files and documents in an office, and enable users to send electronic documents through the same steps a paper document or file would follow. EDMS systems are primarily used in the legal profession to increase efficiency and eliminate the costly inconsistencies that are common in a paper based process. For instance, if the firm has a new case form that is filled out for each client account and it must proceed from the attorney to a paralegal and then back to the attorney, then an EDMS must provide the same path.

Microsoft patches Office 2003 rights-management bug

On December 11, some Office 2003 users discovered that they couldn't open files that included Microsoft right-management protected content. A day later, Microsoft issued a patch. There is a hotfix for Word 2003 and one for Excel 2003 that are downloadable from Microsoft's Web site designed to fix the issue.

Can Drop.io coexist with the FRCP?

My teachers are looking for quick ways to get files to students. We're building infrastructure, so this sort of thing will be able to get into a content management system or onto our SIS within a couple months, but for right now, the courses certainly can't wait for those of us in IT.

DMTF Accepts New Format for Portable Virtual Machines

I just read a press release that indicates that the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) has accepted a new format for portable virtual machine files that was submitted by Dell, HP, IBM, Microsoft, VMware and XenSource. Although this announcement seems just another in an endless series of attempts by vendors to use international standards bodies as a proxy in their battle with one another in the marketplace, I think this one is really important.
