Why spam can only be managed, not ended

Years ago when I was still a bit more naive, I thought we could end the spam dilemma if we would simply implement domain-level sender authentication using digital signatures.  In fact when David Berlind wrote  "Why spam could destroy the Internet" in November 2002, Berlind quoted me saying that every domain's official SMTP server should digitally sign each message to prove the email came from that domain.

Virus attacks prompt Optus server upgrade

Optus plans to upgrade its mail server infrastructure to deal with increased e-mail traffic on its network caused by viruses on customers' machines.A spokesperson for the telco confirmed the increased traffic had caused some customers to experience 'Re-authentication errors' when checking their e-mail.

Tuesday night woes for BigPond broadband users

BigPond cable and ADSL customers in NSW, SA and WA who weren't already logged into the provider's authentication server were blocked out of their "always on" Internet connections last night from 6:05pm AEDT, with the culprit being a faulty power supply in one of Telstra's exchanges in the Sydney CBD.The provider's mail servers were also experiencing problems, with users all over the nation being able to receive mail but with no mail going out.
