Amazon Web Services wants businesses to be able to connect directly to its cloud via a dedicated network connection, for a price.AWS Direct Connect, announced by Amazon Web Services on Thursday, is designed to create a reliable, stable connection between the AWS cloud and a business's datacentre, colocation environment or office.

Amazon cloud used in PlayStation Network hack

Servers owned by Amazon were used as a staging area for the hack that crippled Sony's online entertainment network, according to a source quoted by Bloomberg.Hackers rented computers from Amazon Web Services' (AWS) Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) under an alias and used them to launch the PlayStation Network (PSN) attack, Bloomberg reported on Saturday morning.

AWS expands private cloud networking

Amazon Web Services has added a multitude of free networking features to its virtual private cloud product, boosting security, network topology control and management.The additional features for the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), announced on Monday, simplify the process of setting up a VPC, allow control over the specific network topology of the cloud network, add greater security features and allow the creation of specific internet gateways within the VPC.

Could new public-private network lead to better climate science?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (which is getting a bit-time workout this winter) has joined forces with Earth Networks, the company that announced in January that it is creating a greenhouse gas emissions tracking network in collaboration with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Earth Networks, which used to be known as AWS Convergence Technologies, is the company behind the Weatherbug service.
