Microsoft's Surface tablets will initially reject mobile broadband connectivity for a Wi-Fi-only approach, according to reports.Sources quoted by Bloomberg on Friday said the first models of Microsoft iPad rival would come without the option of 3G or '4G' LTE, both of which are options in Apple's tablet.

3G to cover 85pc of world by 2017, Ericsson forecasts

3G mobile broadband coverage will be available to as many people in 2017 as legacy 2G coverage is today, the network equipment firm Ericsson has predicted.In its second 'Traffic and Market Report' (PDF), published on Tuesday, Ericsson said 85 percent of the world's population will have access to 3G broadband coverage in five years' time, as opposed to the 50 percent that have coverage today.

Three backs down on '4G' rollout claims

The operator Three has toned down a blogpost in which it had claimed it was going to roll out '4G' mobile broadband in the UK this year.The original post appeared on Wednesday, suggesting that Three would market a very fast version of 3G — namely 42Mbps HSPA+ technology — as being 4G.
