Small telcos call for end to 'copper gravy train'

Europe's smaller telecoms firms have warned of a return to the age of telco monopolies, claiming that larger companies are still charging them too much in wholesale fees for their legacy copper networks.The companies, which are members of the European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA), told digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes on Monday that their business case for fibre deployment was not sustainable.

The telecoms regulator Ofcom has come up with new draft caps for how much BT Openreach can charge other ISPs for its wholesale line rental and for local loop unbundling.The reduced rates may lead to lower retail prices for consumers and businesses.

UK sees drop in unbundled lines

The first monthly drop in years has been recorded in the number of UK local-loop unbundled lines, which may suggest a rise in the popularity of cable and fibre broadband alternatives.In the Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator's (OTA) latest assessment of the UK's local-loop unbundling (LLU) landscape, the total number of such lines at the end of May was shown to be 7.
