Xerox unveils remote printing tools

Xerox has announced new tools for those who want to print documents from their mobile phones or other email-enabled devices.The company's Mobile Print Solution (XMPS), which will become generally available in early 2011, will let people securely email their files, such as Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF files, to their firm's private server, from which XMPS will send a confirmation code back to the user.

Net neutrality or protection racket?

If peer to peer traffic is clogging the Internet and slowing down Skype calls, why not mark it as lower priority and do the download overnight? The software updates and Word of Warcraft files that use P2P quite legally aren't hugely urgent and that kind of 'when you’re not busy' bandwidth usage is how Microsoft makes Windows Update polite (the Background Internet Transfer Service doesn't work quite like P2P but some of the principles are similar).

Microsoft patches Office 2003 rights-management bug

On December 11, some Office 2003 users discovered that they couldn't open files that included Microsoft right-management protected content. A day later, Microsoft issued a patch. There is a hotfix for Word 2003 and one for Excel 2003 that are downloadable from Microsoft's Web site designed to fix the issue.

Microsoft patches 31 Windows, IE, Office security holes

Microsoft's batch of patches this month is a big one: 10 bulletins covering a total of 31 documented vulnerabilities affecting the Windows OS, the Internet Explorer browser and the Microsoft Office productivity suite (Word, Works and Excel).Five of the 10 bulletins are rated "critical," Microsoft's highest severity rating.

Has Internet Explorer 8 been released? No.

The validity of stories can never be 100% unless you get the word directly from the horses mouth. In such a case of the release to manufacturing of Internet Explorer 8, the next generation browser from Microsoft, I'm not so sure it has been released.

MWC 09: Quickoffice for Android announced, viewer only

I was all excited to hear more details about the QuickOffice and Documents To Go clients for Android at Mobile World Congress, but was let down a bit when I saw the QuickOffice announcement. I was expecting that these applications would support full Office functionality, but the QuickOffice client is a viewer only for Word and Excel files. It remains to be seen what DataViz can do with Documents To Go.
