Google to support Chrome XP until April 2015 at least

When XP support ends next April will you still be running it? Use Chrome and at least your browser will keep getting security updates. There's a good argument that Google is indulging lax security by doing so.

Microsoft puts Windows 8 users at risk with missing Flash update

Last month, Adobe released a batch of critical security updates for Flash Player. Those updates are available for every modern browser except one. Microsoft has yet to release the update for IE 10 in Windows 8, and may not do so until next month.

Mozilla changes tune on Firefox enterprise support

Mozilla has moved to assure business users that it cares about them after all, a month after its browser chief said the enterprise had never been a focus for the company.In June, Asa Dotzler responded to complaints about the newly-accelerate Firefox release schedule by saying the enterprise, where IT managers need more time to make sure updates do not break web apps, was "really just a drop in the bucket" for Mozilla.

Fraudulent SSL certs force browser updates

Mozilla has updated its Firefox browser after fraudulent certificates for SSL-encrypted websites were issued.Users could mistake fraudulent sites for real websites using HTTPS, and divulge personal information, Mozilla said in a blog post on Tuesday.

Microsoft to ship emergency IE, Visual Studio patches

Less than a month after a first pass at patching a troublesome flaw affecting its dominant Internet Explorer browser, Microsoft has announced plans to release two emergency updates with a comprehensive fix for the problem.The unusual move comes on the heels of a bombshell blog post by reverse engineering specialist Halvar Flake that the original IE kill-bit fix was "insufficient" and that Microsoft "might have accidentally introduced security vulnerabilities into third-party products.

MWC 09: BOLT browser moves to public beta phase

The mobile browser field is getting more and more crowded as companies look to users of the internet on the go. In looking at proxy-based browsers where all the heavy lifting is done on the server we currently have Opera Mini leading the pack with Skyfire in public beta. Today at Mobile World Congress, the BOLT browser moved into public beta. This browser was in private beta from January 15th until now and I tried it on a couple of my phones and found it to be acceptable, but not something I would choose over Opera Mini. The browser has gone through some updates though and is now available as version .86 that is significantly improved over the initial .73 build.

Mozilla's CEO blasted Apple for distributing its Safari browser via the Apple Software Update service on Windows that is used by millions of iTunes users.In a blog posted today, John Lilly, the chief executive of Mozilla, claimed the distribution practice is unethical because it allegedly tricks users into downloading not only their regular iTunes and Quicktime updates but also a brand new web browser -- without the user's consent.
